Scouting Shot

Our beloved, award-winning cover story and fashion feature from Trunk’s Fall/Winter ’12-’13 issue together with scouting shots, and our photographer’s explanation of her inspiration for the shoot:

“From the time I was a young girl and first visited museums, I’ve always been fascinated by Flemish paintings, especially portraits. The mystery of those enigmatic faces, heightened by a rich, dark background, the way the eyes seemed to follow me, if I moved to the right or to the left—they always left me mesmerized.

I wanted to do a fashion story based on the Flemish Primitives—those beautiful translucent Memling women, the dramatic portraits of Jan Van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. All of these artists were the inspiration for this story, which we shot in their city—Bruges.

I love shooting in Flanders. The quality of natural light is so astounding. There is a certain luminosity that is so particular to this region. With Brigitte, the stylist, we tried to work out a visually contemporary homage to these painters, using predominantly Belgian designers, with a few extra favorites to help capture the spirit we were looking for.”
